The dean has administrative responsibility for the university's College of Arts and Sciences and its constituent, the General College, which together provide the curricula leading to most baccalaureate degrees. The College of Arts and Sciences was created in 1935 by the merger of the College of Liberal Arts and the School of Applied Science. The General College was a separate entity until 1961, when it was merged into the College of Arts and Sciences. The collection includes correspondence and other files relating to curricula, faculty, and budget matters in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Also included are historical records reflecting changes in the duties of the dean and the development of the administrative structure of the college.
